Deaf Awareness / Workshop
Deafness awareness training is a beginner friendly introduction to the language and culture of the Australian Deaf community. The aim of this presentation is to equip participants with the basic tools and knowledge to begin communicating with Deaf and hard of hearing people and understanding the barriers they face in their daily lives.
Some examples of topics covered in this Deafness awareness training include:
- What is means to be Deaf or Hard of Hearing
- The differences between English and Auslan
- Methods to communicate with Deaf and HoH people
- Advice for working with Deaf and HoH students in education settings
There are 2 available packages available for a Deafness awareness training session-
Deafness Awareness Training - 2 hours
This 2 hour presentation includes some basic demonstrations of Auslan signs along with the full DAT aimed at preparing participants for future learning of Auslan.
Workshop - 4 hours
This workshop includes a 2 hour Deafness awareness training session and an additional 2 hour basic Auslan lesson. This package is ideal for those wishing to apply some of the knowledge gained in the DAT presentation immediately by combining your new knowledge with some basic Auslan signs. Examples of some sign categories you will learn include:
- Basic Greetings
- Fingerspelling the Auslan Alphabet
Both packages include an Auslan interpreter present.
